Doncaster River Walk: Plastic Litter Pick

  • Doncaster Lock, Marshgate (under north Bridge Road) 27 North Bridge Rd Doncaster DN5 9AD (map)

itter pickers are invited to do a walk with artist Joanna Rucklidge, to pick plastic litter, along a stretch of the River Don. Alongside collecting, participants will create drawn rubbings of the litter to capture the quantity, shapes, functions and scale of these “fugitive” items (before disposal). The artworks will highlight the important contribution that litter-pickers make in public spaces, often unseen and undervalued.

The river, as a site of recreation, will often attract single-use plastic waste due to its lightweight nature, and durable qualities. Whilst plastic litter often joins waterways, and can eventually reach the sea, this project aims to prevent this, protecting the River Don, its network, environment and wildlife.

The drawings will become part of an exhibition for the River Don Project in March 2025 at Kelham Island Museum in Sheffield.

Meeting point: The entrance to Doncaster Lock, Marshgate (under north Bridge Road), 27 North Bridge Rd, Doncaster DN5 9AD.
